How it all began ...

ABOUT US

Beyond professional ties, Tommy and Sophie, met at a festival and slowly fell in love over the following years. We found common purpose and ambition: The marriage of friends brought us to Sri Lanka in 2022, where we did not just fall for the country and its people, but also got to know our companion Pali. Sri Lanka with its political program for organic agriculture, its 2021 fertilizer crisis and a subsequent food crisis in 2022 would captivate our attention.

Meanwhile, the failure of the global north in restricting carbon emissions to the targets of the Paris Climate Convention became more and more evident. The increase in extreme weather events and constantly breaking heat records are approaching warning shots. In our perspective, ecological and climatological issues are of unparalleled relevance. In the face of these enormous challenges, we refused to succumb to paralysis. We wanted to direct our focus towards the interconnected issues of sustainable consumption and production, circular economy, and climate change. Our goal is to craft a feasible, positive future, inspiring everyone to contribute. We firmly believe that the global south holds vast resources, capable of fostering both economic prosperity and ecological sustainability. To us, the often invoked "inevitability" is, in reality, a lack of creativity.

Tommy's prior academic research fueled our business idea and was ignited by our shared attitudes and passion for individually driven change. With dimmed light in an Italian restaurant, the idea of promoting Biochar in Sri Lanka was ultimately born. Convincing Pali and getting him on board was easy as pie.

In April 2023 Fuscum Soil Enhancer was founded.

Among others, Walter Danner from Char2Cool provided crucial insights on building the project as a social enterprise. Without the encouragement, thoughtful input, and support from our family and friends, special thanks to Jonas, Dimi, Philipp, our parents and many more we wouldn't have come this far.

The Team

We are a tight-knit team of three individuals, each bringing unique and complementary skills to drive forward our shared mission surrounded by the lush beauty of Sri Lanka.

Tommy comes with over 10 years as an emergency paramedic in Berlin and international assignments in Papua New Guinea and Mozambique. During his studies in Geography and Philosophy he was introduced to the multifaceted benefits of biochar doing research in Uganda. He later served as the CEO of a mobile event solution startup.

Palitha, a versatile biologist plays a crucial role as an eco-tourism activist and a prominent leader in the protection of the Sinharaja rainforest. His scientific knowledge and extensive experience in agriculture maneuver us through the local context. Staffed with exceptional communication and intercultural mediation skills, he and his changemaker attitude make him indispensable to our team.

Sophie, holding two master's degrees in Special Education and Neurosciences, dedicated her time in Berlin and other European countries to support refugees. Slowly shifting her focus on tackling root causes sustainably, she brings in her passion and experience for strategic planning and flexible management, ensuring efficient business development.
